How To Stay Stylish + Warm This Winter

February 6, 2015 Julien Garman
ItsJulien

This past week, I had the pleasure of participating in a segment on Let’s Talk Live! The segment was on how to look cute in the cold (the struggle is sooooo real!) Rosana Vollmerhausen, owner and chief stylist of DC Style Factory, was so much fun to work with. Also HUGE shout out to Sunny Oh of Denise Sharp Hair Salon for transforming my hair and face for the segment!

My role on the segment was β€˜weekend warrior,” and I’m obsessed with everything Rosana chose for me. Below, she explains the method to the madness! Check out the segment here and see the rest of the models Rosana styled below!)

From Rosana:
One surefire way to stay warm in these arctic temps is with some creative layering. Puffy jackets can feel unstylish and by adding a few layers, we add depth and interest to her look. I wanted to give Julien a look that was youthful, but still polished. Even though it could easily be an outfit to run errands in, the pointy-toe loafers and dark jeans add a streamlined element to her overall look. Flannel shirts have been all rage, but they can easily look sloppy. I chose to add the pointy-toe loafer and dark skinny jeans to update the flannel shirt from how we've seen it done in the grunge heyday of the '90s.

Julien is curvier below the waist so we wanted to employ a few style strategies with her look. First balance her proportions by selecting a dark wash denim (recedes) and a lighter top that would draw attention up.  The most minimizing place for top/jacket to hit is the widest point of your hips.  Finally, the loafer with a pointy, longer toe box also lengthens her leg line.

Stylecable Pop Up in Cady's Alley

A few weeks ago, my gal pal and jewelry maven, Jen, asked if I wanted to attend the Stylecable Pop Up with her. Supporting local designers, finding the coolest holiday gifts and getting to hang with owner/founder Uyen Tang? Umm duh.

A few favorite highlights from the pop-up?

Scarves from DeNada
Apparently all the cool kids knew these excited a long time ago. Let me tell you - they’re the softest, best, most lovely items I’ve seen in a while.  Each knit piece handmade with an alpaca blend in peru. Virginia ArrisueΓ±o, has created an empire. You have to feel it to believe it.

Hats and Scarves from Twice as Warm
When I bought this hat (in blue) from these guys at the pop up, my husband totally REEMED me out at home for not buying him one. (Little did he know this one was in his stocking for Christmas!) They’re like a luxe basic without the major price tag. But the best thing about them? For every hat or scarf you buy, they donate one to a someone in need within the DC area. What’s not to love?!

Jewelry from Elaine B Jewelry
I can’t sing Elaine’s praises enough. I picked up this cute ring while browsing the pop up and it’s become one of my favorites (see here!) She has so many gorgeous, dainty pieces that you absolutely need to see in person. I’m hooked!

The Stylecable pop-up ends on Sunday, January 4, so please don't miss out. It was one of the coolest shopping experiences I've ever had. It’s located in Georgetown at 3330 Cady’s Alley NW, Washington D.C. Also check out my feature on HANUEL to get an inside look at what it’s like to be a blogger (all shots were taken at the pop-up!) Details of what I wore are coming to the blog next week - all jewelry worn is Hanuel.

Georgetown Welcomes Rent the Runway

December 4, 2014 Julien Garman
Renttherunway

Last week, bloggers, media and fashionable women alike all gathered on M Street to celebrate the grand opening of Rent the Runway’s second brick and mortar location (the first being in NYC.) If that’s not enough to convince you of how stylish DC is, I certainly don’t know what will.

DC’s most fashionable crowd swirled champagne, devoured macaroons and sampled crepes in the hugely expansive showrooms. Others took the opportunity to try on outfits for their next big event. Still others hovered over mega designer and Project Runway alum, Christian Siriano, in hopes of snapping a selfie. It was a night for the books, err, instagram feed.

Given the insane number of events and holiday parties in the coming months, I know I’ll be taking advantage of being able to try on dresses and rent them right there in store. Happy wallet, happy life. That’s how the saying goes, right?

Take a peek at a few snaps from the opening below and be sure to check out the store in person for the full effect!
Click here to get $20 off your first rental!
Rent the Runway is located at 3336 M Street in Georgetown.

Loudoun County Style Launch Party

November 21, 2014 Julien Garman

A few weeks ago, I attended the launch party for Loudoun County Style, a website curated for residents of LoCo looking for upscale and luxury events, services and shops. I’ve lived in Loudoun my entire life, so I’m totally stoked that it’s finally being recognized for all it has to offer! Founder and editor, Sara Llanes, is one of the sweetest girls in town and quite the party host. Here are some highlights from the night:

Local treats
My two favorite local vendors of the night were most definitely Stone Tower Winery (which I already knew I loved) and new-comer Catoctin Creek Distillery. They brought their Loudoun Lemonade with them, which I immediately fell in love with. It is SO GOOD.

The venue
When we arrived at the party, it was like a rustic dream. Shadow Creek had hanging lights, vintage furniture and a brand-new wood smell. If this was around when I had gotten married, it would have most definitely been a contender.

The flowers
I’m a sucker for a good bouquet, so when I saw these flowers from Taffy Floral, there was major swooning going on.

Friends
I attended the party with founder of Mars Vida, Maria! See our best selfie below.
