Work-Life Balance

April 22, 2015 Julien Garman

Ah, the illusionary work-life balance. It’s the thing each persons yearns for yet hardly any of us succeed in. Is there ever a point when we feel like we have it all figured out?

When Meg Biram shared this month’s blog LinkUp topic, work-life balance, I was intrigued. Being one who is busy all the time (full time job, running a blog, dog mom, wife/sister/daughter/friend), I do have a few things up my sleeve on how I try to keep my life balanced.

I take time for myself
DO WHAT YOU LOVE. I can’t say it enough. If you want to paint, paint! If you love to write, write away. If you love reading, make time for it.

Giving back
We can’t just take and take and take and expect to feel balanced. We need to give too. Whether that’s helping an elderly neighbor bring in the groceries or spending time volunteering at the local dog shelter, giving back does more for us than we realize.

I devote myself fully to the task at hand
This isn’t always easy…my ADHD mind races constantly, and I really have to work at staying focused. But when I can give my ALL to a project at work, when I put away my phone at dinner, and when I give each post my all, the results are always better.

Make time for exercise:
No excuses here. This is one of the most important ways I stay balanced. Without it, my whole body feels out of whack. I usually take my lunch break and put in a good half hour in my building’s gym three times a week and try go bike riding or jogging at least two other days. It’s an instant mood lifter and helps freshen my mind for the rest of the workday.

Eating right
This goes without saying, but I feel most balanced and happy when I put the right foods in my body. I’ve just started a clean eating program for the next month (RIP Chipotle, miss you) and it’s helped me have a clearer mind and feel less of the mid-afternoon slump. And when you eat healthy, it helps lead to other positive decisions.

Relationships
I don’t know if everyone is like this, but I feel most balanced when I’m spending time with those I love or those who inspire me. I need quality time with my hubby, my family, my girls, and making new friends to feel balanced. If I go too long without brunching with my babes, I am not a happy camper.

Dedicated time to blog
Some of you may not know, but I commute into work. “Well so does everyone else!” BUT YOU GUYS - I commute 50 miles into work. Just let that sink in. While some may call Loudoun County Virginia’s wine country, I call it home. #sorrynotsorry but I love it. People tell me all the time what a crazy-person I am for living so far from where I work. But here’s the thing - I use that long commute to do my blog work on the bus. I’m not the most organized person ever, so it’s really nice for me to have dedicated time I can work on something. And this way, when I get home after a long day at work, I can just relax, cook and enjoy the evening.

Spirituality
A lot of people feel like there’s something missing in their lives, but I don’t feel that way at all. Prayer is probably the top thing that keeps me centered and balanced. At the beginning of each day, I give all my concerns, my cares, my worries to God and from that moment on, I’m not burdened with those things. It’s very freeing.

Listen to Your Body
This is one thing I almost always do. If my body is saying GO TO BED, I’m there. Does it make me a looser who goes to bed early? Yes. But am I happier person because of it? Yes.

Ok so those are the things I prioritize to create balance in my life. "But Julien, there are only 24 hours in a day!" YES, yes there are. So guess what? Something’s gotta give. Here’s what makes it more manageable for me:

Taking bite sized pieces of my priorities and making them happen. So somedays, I’ll choose to read on the bus instead of working on the blog. Or other times, I’ll workout then grab takeout because I’m too tired to cook. If this is you, the important thing is to not beat yourself up about it. We’re all in this journey learning how to LIVE FULLY together.

Saying no is ok. Would I love to go to all the events, workout seven times a week, see my biffles daily and get at least 9 hours of sleep every night? OF COURSE. But I can't, so I have to say no to some things to keep my balance (and sanity!) in check.

Do you have any tips on work-life balance? I'd love to hear them in the comments section below! Be sure to check out the other ladies in the linkup to get more tips on work-life balance!

Drybar Georgetown

April 9, 2015 Julien Garman
Julienbefore.jpg

After a crazy week at work last week (you know the story - sleep, work, eat, work, eat, work, sleep), I decided a little pampering was in order. I’d always wanted to try out the Drybar in Georgetown (blowouts are all only $40 HELLO!) and it was Cheralee’s last weekend in town, so we made a morning of it.

We made an early appointment so we could get a heard start on shopping. While we waited for shampoo stations to open up, we watched Mean Girls on the big TV and I decided I was never going to leave. EVER.

When it came time to get my hair done, I browsed the lookbook and waffled on two hairstyles (the Cosmo and the Mai Tai.) Luckily, my killer hairstylist informed me of the mix-drink, the Cosmo-Thai, so I could have the best of both worlds. Love her. I was amazed at how she styled my hair mostly with a round brush - I can barely comb through my hair in the morning let alone create perfect waves with a flick of the wrist. She finished off with the Sparkling Soda shine mist, which helped tame my famous flyaways. And the smell! Swoon. Am I the only one who will buy or not buy a product based on how yummy it smells?

Here's the thing - I could write and write about how gorgeous and welcoming Drybar is, and I could tell you how obsessed I was with the results...instead, let me show you...

All about Lyst - Video edition

March 19, 2015 Julien Garman

You know how friends don’t let friends miss out on awesome shopping websites? Well this is me - not letting you miss out. Let me tell you a little about my new favorite shopping destination, Lyst.

Lyst is basically a website that pulls content from all your favorite shopping sites and does the work for you. Umm yes please. It's set up in a super easy user-friendly way which is a must for me when I'm shopping. You can filter your searches by size, budget, color, brand, ANYTHING YOU COULD EVER THINK OF. It's basically magic. On the interwebs.

Why do I love Lyst so much? Check out my video explaining below!

And when you set up an account (you will literally not not be able to - it's that good!), be sure to follow my Lysts so I can follow you back! Shopping besties forever.

ALSO: Last week, Lyst launched their .gif creator feature, which is SO. MUCH. FUN. to play around with. See my clip below and make your own here!

This post was sponsored by Lyst and I've been compensated. However, I only share things with you that I'm 100% behind. I actually really love Lyst and I have a feeling that you will too.

Girls Day at Mosaic District

December 19, 2014 Julien Garman

Is there really anything better than grabbing a bunch of your girlfriends and going shopping? No. No there is not.

So that's what Tammy, Natalie and Cheralee and I did last weekend at one of my favorite shopping spots, Mosaic District. Mosaic is fairly new, but already has almost all my favorite shops and restaurants. Check out my favorite spots below!

SHOPS:
Anthom // A gorgeous boutique featuring thoughtfully curated clothing and accessories by under-the-radar designers and independent labels from the USA and around the globe. You've seen me wear outfits from Anthom a lot (like here, here and here.)

Take 5 Boutique // When you walk into Take 5, you know you're on a whole 'nother level of style. With eclectic pieces from all around the globe, it's where DC's most fashionable women shop for luxe basics (think wool and leather skirts and Haute Hippie sweaters) and also one-of-a-kind evening wear.

South Moon Under // I popped in here to shop for gifts and accidentally found a bunch of super cute items for myself. (#sorrynotsorry) They carry so much awesomeness that you just have to see the store for yourself (also told my hubby I needed this for Christmas or else.)

Federal // My hubby loved every. single. thing. in this store. If you're a last minute shopper, head here first.

Sophie Blake + Erika Schrieber Pop Up// Two of my favorite local fashion babes collide to bring the DC area a chance to try on their amazing pieces. Think edgy earrings and the coolest crop top in town.

FOR THE FOODIES:
Ah Love Oil & Vinegar // These olive oils make salads worth eating.

Swirl & Sip // Such a fun place to go in search of a special wine (and treats to go with!) They do wine tastings in store so basically it's the best place that ever existed.

CAVA // Basically the chipotle of Mediterranean food. It's so good you'll never ever want to leave.

Dolcezza // Please do not leave Mosaic without going here for coffee/gelato/croissant. Prepare for instagram-worthy awesomeness to ensue.

Have you been to Mosaic District? If so, what are your favorite places to visit there? (If you haven't, I highly recommend a visit ASAP. Follow along with all their fun happenings with their calendar of events, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, blog and Pinterest!) Photos above taken at Anthom, Sophie Blake + Erika Schrieber pop up and Take 5 Boutique, respectively.

Mararons for Brunch

August 26, 2014 Julien Garman

Brunch, one of my favorite meals of the week. Typically enjoyed on an early Sunday morning, brunch is a time when the hubs and I really get to catch up on tech news, the week’s struggles and daydream about our future home. But best of all, it’s a time when we get to do something special for each other and enjoy the awesomeness that is all-things-breakfast.

Shawn is in charge of the coffee. Always. He works his chemex magic and I am typically in charge of something smaller, like the veggie bacon. Oh and decorating the brunch table. That’s very important too.

Last Sunday, we enjoyed something extra special with our brunch - some ridiculously tasty macarons from J.Macaron. I’m always wary of trying macarons because I’ve become quite the macaron snob. Needless to say, I almost cried tears of happiness upon biting into these. I won’t even try to explain how amazing they are because no words can express the pure joy you’ll feel when you try them. Please do yourself a favor and be the star of your labor day party by ordering a dozen or two. Or more. I’d recommend more. If you want to taste them before you order, head to the Blogger Scene party tomorrow, where they’ll be placed in the first 50 goodie bags. But just know, I’ll be racing you there.

A big, huge, ginormous thanks to Jessica of J.Macaron for sending these macarons over for me to try! As always, all opinions are my own and my opinion of these macarons is that they are awesome...in case you didn't get the point above...
