Tips on Taking Outfit Photos in the Cold

February 27, 2015 Julien Garman

Unless you live in LA, Florida or anywhere near the equator, winters can be brutal. And taking outfit photos when the weather is crummy? The literal worst. The biting cold, the limited options (unless you have an unlimited cute coat supply), all of it can really put a damper on blogging. That's why I've put together a few tips on how I get through the bitter cold while taking outfit photos!

1. Two words: hand warmers.
These can make a shoot go from brutal to bearable. It’s much easier to give a real smile when you aren’t shivering.

2. Bribe your photographer with brunch (or coffee at the very least.)
Even when my husband shoots, I’ll try to even think of something nice to do for him, like bake his favorite treat. No one wants to feel like they're being used, especially when it's under 40 degrees.

3. Fingerless gloves are your friend.
If you’re shooting with another blogger (like I typically do), it’s a great idea that whomever is shooting keeps their hands warm. The fingerless gloves really make a difference.

4. Scout a location beforehand.
Nothing is worse than wondering around looking for a great spot in the cold. NOTHING. Sometimes I’ll drive around and look for a great spot so I’m not searching in the cold.

5. Have a shot list in mind beforehand.
When it’s cold, I can easily forget things. That cute necklace you’re being paid to promote? The whole reason you’re shooting in the first place? It may be forgotten if it isn’t written down.

6. Take an extra moment to notice the little things.
It’s so easy to want to get through a shoot quickly that it’s not until you get home until you realize one of your blazer sleeves was rolled while the other wasn’t. This has happened twice to me and BOTH were done when the weather was cold. Make a mental (or physical) checklist to ensure the styled shoots are styled the way you want.

7. Smart layering.
Fleece lined tights, tights under leggings, thermals under sweaters…be smart about the way you’re layering. Don’t layer so much that you look like a grizzly bear (unless you’re going for that furry monster look, those jackets are the coolest though.) Just like when you’re teacher told you not to study more, but smarter? Same with layering.

Do you have any other tips? Share in the comments below and I'll add to the list!

Update on Winter and Such

February 25, 2015 Julien Garman

A few months back, right before the weather got unbearable, I posted 10 ways to beat the winter blues. Some of the things I’d tried and some I wanted to check out. Here’s an update:

Working out: The whole waking up early or working out when I got home thing just wasn’t working. So I decided to utilize my lunch hour three times a week at my work gym. Oh I struggled with making this decision. What if people I know see me working out? What if people I work with see me sweat? Like it was a big thing. Then I decided - I’d rather be embarrassed then gain anymore weight. I can’t begin to tell you how much this has helped me. I have so much more energy and I find that my general happiness scale is much higher on days I work out.

Clean eating: Ehh, this one hasn’t really gone according to plan…the carbs keep coming back to haunt me. However, on days when I drink a green smoothie or have a salad for dinner, I feel much better.

Not hibernating: FAIL on almost all fronts. I also blame The Blacklist.

Not going to bed early: Also a fail. Life is hard.

Buying cute coats: I should have mentioned this more the last time, but I’m realizing that it’s not always the cute coat I grab before I head out the door…it’s whichever coat is the warmest. Thus, need to find a super cute, down jacket with furry hood asap.

Take vitamins regularly: This is probably the second best thing I’ve done for myself…when I don’t forget. I really need to get myself one of those weekly pill contraptions but I’ve resisted considering how old I feel when I see one.

Get some sun: Umm sike. This weather has not been conductive to enjoying any amount of sunlight. When the weather is above 45, I may be seen outside taking outfit photos.

Take a vacation: This is coming a little later this year for me…but thankfully I am headed to sunny Florida on FRIDAY. Yes, that is t-minus two days and counting. GUYS just having this on my calendar gives me joy. And hope. Please take advantage of a long weekend and JUST GO.

Limit caffeine intake: This has gone really well, surprisingly. I’ve switched out my evening hot chocolate/latte for decaffeinated tea and it works wonders for my mood.

Focusing on a passion or learn something new: I sort of anticipated that I would get more involved in artsy things, I’ve developed an even deeper love for cooking…and tried a ton of new recipes. Like I want to be one of those moms where their kids are like, ‘oh ya my mom is literally the best cook ever.” #lifegoals The latest in my homemade cooking adventures has been homade granola. SO GOOD YOU GUYS. I basically went off of Barefoot Blonde’s recipe and added a cup or two of coconut shreds. Mmmm mmmm good.

So that's where I am...how have you been surviving this treacherous winter? Share with me in the comments below!

February Beauty Favorites

BeautyFavorites

Over the past few months, I’ve been experimenting with some beauty products. I used to have the same go-to products, but I’ve felt a little more adventurous lately. I’d love to incorporate more beauty posts into the blog, and if it’s something you’d like to see more of, let me know in the comments below!

Here are a few of my favorite beauty products as of late:

Tarte Colored Clay CC Undereye Corrector: This has saved me for nights spent binge watching The Blacklist. You put it over your foundation and it helps brighten your eyes and hide the dark spots. Let the binge watching continue...

bareMinerals Lash Domination Volumizing Mascara: I had been using a drugstore brand mascara for years and just wasn't satisfied. In an accidental shopping spree at Ulta one day, I discovered this magic potion for my eyes. It goes on thick but not clumpy, which means I don't have to apply 50 layers to see results. Even though it's twice as much as I used to pay, this will forever be my new go-to mascara.

Laura Mercier ’Ambre Vanillè' Soufflé Body Crème: I received a sampling of the Laura Mercier soufflé body creams for Christmas and I. AM. OBSESSED. This scent is my absolute favorite of the bunch. I carry the sample size to work and it honestly feels like I'm indulging in a sweet treat when I use this on my hands. The downside is that it's pretty pricy (a cool $60) but in the winter, we should be aloud to indulge a bit for our dry skin, right?

Laura Geller Color Drenched Lip Gloss: I've been on the hunt for some pretty new lip colors and tried this on a whim at ULTA. I looovveeee the color, and it's non-sticky, which I know we can all appreciate. It's brighter than it looks in photos, but I use it in almost every outfit shoot (see here!)

Julep in Jules: The secret's out - I'm into pink. I also got this for Christmas in my stocking and with a name like Jules, how could it not be my go-to?

Tied

February 18, 2015 Julien Garman

I'm going to just go ahead and admit defeat. Winter, you are KILLING my soul (also my vibe.) You've turned me into a grouchy, go-to-bed early monster with little to no self esteem. Ok, maybe I'm slightly over-exaggerating (not really), but I am literally counting the days (one month, two days) until spring arrives.

I really loved the little taste of spring we got a few weeks ago. Remember that one Sunday? Man I miss that day. While I was originally wearing this turtleneck over my lace dress, I tied it around my waist once it started warming up. I really love the slimming effect it has. And yes, I know cold weather is here for another two months, but I can't stop thinking about springtime picnics, starting our garden, enjoying brunch on our deck, and getting back into exercising outside...dear spring, COME SOON!

Valentine's Day Outfit Inspiration

February 13, 2015 Julien Garman

Having trouble deciding what to wear on Valentine's Day? I've rounded up a few of my favorite outfits for the occasion!

Also - side tangent - putting together this post has really reminded me how much I love pink. Pink blazers in particular. I have three that I find myself wearing A TON. Two of them are blush. Maybe I don't mind a little color now and then after all!
